Biomarkers, panels, and combining tests in one home visit

Understand the difference between a biomarker and a panel, and how several tests may be collected during one visit.

A biomarker is a measurable value, such as haemoglobin, ferritin, fasting glucose, HbA1c, vitamin D, thyroid-stimulating hormone, creatinine, or cholesterol. A panel groups several biomarkers around a health question or body system.

Why panels exist

Many health questions cannot be answered by one number. A panel can show related values together and help a clinician interpret the pattern rather than one isolated result.

Panels can overlap

Two panels may include some of the same biomarkers. Review the included list before purchasing several packages. DarDoc may be able to help you identify duplicates or choose a more efficient combination.

Can several tests use one blood draw?

Often, multiple ordered tests can be collected during one visit, but the number and type of tubes depend on the laboratory requirements. Some tests need different sample types, special handling, timed collection, urine, or another separate procedure.

What to confirm before booking

  • The exact biomarkers included

  • The sample type

  • Whether fasting is required

  • Whether collection must happen at a particular time

  • Whether medication or supplement information is needed

  • The estimated result time

  • Whether the selected tests can be combined into one visit

Do not add tests only because they are available

A useful result is one that informs care. If you are uncertain, ask a clinician which biomarkers answer the question and when they should be collected.

Use the live test catalogue to compare included biomarkers and current packages.
