What to expect when your newborn caregiver arrives

The caregiver should arrive around the agreed start time and follow the access instructions provided.

Verify the visit

Confirm the caregiver’s name against the profile or booking information. If an unexpected person arrives, contact DarDoc before beginning care.

Give a handover

Share changes since the last shift:

  • Most recent feed

  • Diaper change

  • Sleep

  • Medication already given by the parent, when relevant

  • New symptoms or medical advice

  • Supplies running low

  • Appointments or schedule changes

During the shift

The caregiver follows the agreed routine and keeps the parents informed in the manner discussed.

You can ask questions and observe the care. If you want something done differently, explain the preference as long as it remains safe and within the caregiver’s scope.

At the end of the shift

Ask for a brief handover covering feeds, sleep, diaper changes, observations, and anything requiring follow-up.

Confirm that the baby’s supplies and care area are left organised as agreed.

Timing questions

Traffic, building access, or an earlier service can occasionally affect arrival. DarDoc’s published Home Nursing terms use a 20-minute arrival tolerance before or after the scheduled time.

If the caregiver is outside that window and you have no update, contact the Care Team.

Hygiene and household safety

Show the caregiver where handwashing is available and explain any household infection precautions. Tell DarDoc if someone at home has a contagious illness before the shift.

Keep pets away from the baby’s care area unless the family and caregiver have agreed on a safe arrangement.

Parent involvement

At-home care should not make parents feel excluded. You can ask what the caregiver is doing, request a handover, and remain involved in decisions.

If the caregiver receives an instruction that conflicts with a clinician’s plan or appears unsafe, pause and clarify it.
